The Polished Pitbull is a breed specific rescue in the Philadelphia area. Our goal is to take temperamentally-sound dogs and find them great homes. We teach our dogs basic obedience skills and have wonderful relationships with trainers throughout the area who can help with any issues such as jumping, counter surfing and leash walking. We need adopters and the public alike to have a better understanding of pitbull and pitbull mix dogs. We are NOT a shelter. If you are thinking of surrendering your pitbull to a shelter and your dog is a people-loving pitbull, please think twice. Every urban shelter in the United States is full of pitbulls; most of them are euthanized due to lack of space. 2000-3000 a DAY are killed in shelter throughout the US. Many will ONLY euthanize pitbulls and are NOT rescue-friendly, so please consider this carefully before you take that final step.
All of our dogs are spayed/neutered and UTD on shots and are fed a superior dog food while awaiting adoption. Our adoption fee is $150. Our most important goal is a GOOD FIT for OUR DOG with an ADOPTER.
What does it take to be a successful adopter? Read on:
Adopters, like dogs, come in all shapes and sizes. Some are single and live in a studio in a city; others have large families and big fenced in property. Some have owned dogs their whole lives, others are novices.
What we look for in adopters though, is one thing: commitment. We see pet guardianship as a lifelong trust. There is a life dependent on you, and it’s a responsibility unlike any other.
How to commit?
Realistic expectations: Get the dog that fits your life. You’re not going to change, don’t expect the dog to. You’re a couch potato, get a low energy dog. Have kids, consider what temperament is best. Think before you leap. It’s a big decision, not an impulse.
Patience: A shelter dog and even a dog in foster, needs time, to adjust, to settle in, to feel safe. They’ve been traumatized. Even the most housetrained dog might have accidents, or chew something up out of stress. Be patient. We advocate for a two week 'shutdown' so you and your new dog can bond.
Exercise: Nothing balances a dog more than exercise. Take a walk, run, teach your dog to treadmill. Lots of videos on YouTube will show you how. Moving forward is how a dog propels their body, their thinking. An exhausted dog is a happy dog.
Training: Obedience training is essential. We know many balanced trainers we can recommend to you and many will offer a discounted rate to you for the first few lessons.
Nutrition: Dogs, like people, can become irritable, hyper, depressed if fed the wrong diet. There’s great dog food out there, and horrible. Do your research, because it does make a difference. www.dogfoodadvisor.com is a good place to start.
Leadership: Dogs need to know their place in the pack. It’s their nature. If they don’t have that, they’re confused and stressed, and unwanted behaviors appear. Leadership is key, and comes through training and consistency.
The Polished Pitbull screens applications, checks references, does home visits, brings the dog to meet you in your home. What we’re really looking for though, is that commitment. Shelter dogs are eternally grateful when shown love, leadership, good meals and exercise.
